Does Fiverr Send You a 1099? Only a 1099-K, and Only Over $20,000

Fiverr reports U.S. sellers' earnings on a Form 1099-K, never a 1099-NEC, and only above $20,000 and 200 transactions in a year. Its own help page still describes the 2023 and 2024 rules. Here is what the form counts, when it counts it, how not to deduct the fee twice, and why buyers do not send you a 1099 at all.

Fiverr sends U.S. sellers a Form 1099-K, never a 1099-NEC, and only when earnings pass $20,000 and transactions pass 200 in the same calendar year, with each tip counting as a transaction. Fiverr's own help page still describes the 2023 and 2024 rules, including a $5,000 threshold that the 2025 law repealed. Income counts when funds clear, not when an order is completed. Fiverr does not say whether the form shows the full order price or the 80 percent you keep, so check it against your Statement of Earnings before you deduct the fee. The income is taxable whether or not a form arrives.

Key takeaways

  • Fiverr issues a 1099-K and never a 1099-NEC, and only above $20,000 in earnings and 200 transactions in one calendar year, both at once.
  • Tips are separate transactions, so they count toward the 200, and the form lists tip earnings on their own.
  • Fiverr's help page still describes the 2023 and 2024 rules. The federal test for 2026 is more than $20,000 and more than 200 transactions.
  • Income counts when funds clear, 14 days after completion or 7 for Top Rated sellers, so late-December orders can move to the next year's form.
  • Fiverr never invoices its 20 percent fee and never says whether Box 1a is gross or net, so reconcile the form with your Statement of Earnings before deducting the fee.
  • Buyers who pay through Fiverr do not issue a 1099-NEC to the seller.

Fiverr sends U.S. sellers a Form 1099-K, and only once a year's earnings pass $20,000 and the year's transactions pass 200. It never sends a 1099-NEC, and the buyers you work for do not send one either. Most sellers never cross both lines, which means no form at all, and the income is just as taxable without one.

A 1099-K, never a 1099-NEC

A client who hires you directly sends a 1099-NEC once they pay you $2,000 or more in 2026. Fiverr is different because the money moves through Fiverr. Payments in a third-party network are reported on Form 1099-K under the payment card and network rules, so Fiverr files a 1099-K for you when the federal threshold is met, and nothing else. The test has two prongs and both must be met in the same calendar year: more than $20,000 in earnings and more than 200 transactions. Fiverr counts each tip as its own transaction toward the 200, and the form lists your total earnings and your tip earnings separately. Upwork works the same way, for the same reason.

Fiverr's help page describes the rules from two years ago

Fiverr's W-9 help page, last edited in 2026, still explains the 1099-K threshold in terms of the 2023 and 2024 tax years. In the same article it says that the 200-transaction test was eliminated starting in 2023, that it was eliminated starting in 2024 and replaced with $5,000, and that it currently applies. Those cannot all be true. What happened: the IRS applied a $5,000 threshold for 2024, lower figures were scheduled for the years after, and the One Big Beautiful Bill Act then restored the original test of more than $20,000 and more than 200 transactions, including for 2025. For 2026 that is the federal rule. A few states set lower thresholds of their own, and Fiverr does not list them. Our guide to the 1099 threshold covers every form and which numbers belong to which year.

Income counts when it clears, not when you deliver

Fiverr considers money earned when the funds have cleared and become available to withdraw. Withdrawing does not matter, and neither does the day the order was marked complete. The clearing period is 14 days after completion, or 7 days for Top Rated sellers, so an order you finish in the last two weeks of December, or the last week for a Top Rated seller, clears in January and lands on the next year's form. If your own year-end total does not match the form, look at the last two weeks of December first.

Do not deduct the 20 percent fee twice

Fiverr keeps 20 percent of each order, tips and extras included, and credits you with the other 80 percent. Here the help center leaves a gap. It says the 1099-K lists your total earnings, and it defines earnings as the 80 percent, but it never says outright which figure lands in Box 1a. The IRS instructions describe that box as the gross amount with no reduction for fees, which points the other way.

So check before you file. Download your Statement of Earnings from the Financial documents tab and compare. If the form matches the full order amounts, report that figure as income and deduct Fiverr's fee as a business expense. If it matches your 80 percent, the fee is already gone from the number, and deducting it again would understate your income by the same amount. Fiverr does not issue invoices for its commission, so the Statement of Earnings and the activity report you can email yourself from the Earnings page are the only records of the fee it gives you. Keep them with the form.

The W-9, and what happens without one

Every seller declares whether they are a U.S. person. U.S. sellers fill in an online W-9 with their full name, address, and Social Security number, and Fiverr pauses your Gigs if the W-9 is not done within 30 days of the request. That is also the information the form will carry, so update it before January if anything changed. Fiverr's Payment Terms say any amount Fiverr is required to withhold comes out of your earnings, and the federal backup withholding rate is 24 percent, which is one more reason to keep the W-9 current.

Where the form appears

Fiverr sends forms in January for the whole previous tax year, so the 2026 form arrives in January 2027. To get it, go to your Earnings page, open the Financial documents tab, and choose the 1099-K download report. Fiverr sends a verification code to your phone, you pick the year, and a download link arrives by email.

One more thing to watch if you withdraw through PayPal. If you ever receive a second 1099-K for the same money, the IRS says to ask the issuer of the duplicate for a corrected form showing zero, and not to wait for it before you file. Report the income once.

If you hire on Fiverr, you do not file a 1099-NEC

Buyers ask this every January. The IRS instructions for Form 1099-NEC say payments made in third-party network transactions are reported on Form 1099-K and are not subject to 1099-NEC reporting, and the regulations apply that relief even when the seller never crosses the 1099-K threshold. Fiverr tells U.S. buyers to set up Fiverr as the vendor rather than each freelancer, and provides Fiverr Inc.'s own W-9 for that purpose. If you pay contractors directly outside a platform, the ordinary 1099-NEC rules apply instead.

Below the line, same tax

Most Fiverr sellers never receive a form, and every dollar is still self-employment income that belongs on Schedule C, with income tax and self-employment tax on the profit. The form decides only whether Fiverr files paperwork. For what you can take off besides the fee, see tax deductions for freelancers.

Frequently asked questions

Does Fiverr send you a 1099?

Only a Form 1099-K, and only when you pass the federal threshold: more than $20,000 in earnings and more than 200 transactions in the same calendar year. Fiverr does not issue a 1099-NEC to sellers. Tips count as separate transactions toward the 200, and the form lists your total earnings and your tip earnings separately.

Why does Fiverr's help page mention $5,000?

Because it was written for the 2023 and 2024 tax years and has not been updated for the 2025 law. The IRS applied a $5,000 threshold for 2024 and lower figures were scheduled after that, but the One Big Beautiful Bill Act restored the original test of more than $20,000 and more than 200 transactions, including for 2025. That is the federal rule for 2026. Some states set lower thresholds of their own.

Is the amount on my Fiverr 1099-K before or after the 20% fee?

Fiverr does not say. It describes the form as listing your total earnings, and it defines earnings as the 80 percent left after its fee, but it never states which figure appears in Box 1a. Check the form against your Statement of Earnings. If the form shows the full order amounts, report that and deduct Fiverr's fee as a business expense. If it shows your 80 percent, the fee is already out, and deducting it again would understate your income.

Do buyers on Fiverr need to send the seller a 1099-NEC?

No. The IRS instructions for Form 1099-NEC say payments made in third-party network transactions are reported on Form 1099-K and are not subject to 1099-NEC reporting, and that relief applies even when the seller is under the 1099-K threshold. Fiverr asks U.S. buyers to set up Fiverr as the vendor, using Fiverr Inc.'s own W-9, rather than each freelancer.

When does Fiverr count income for the 1099-K?

When the funds clear and become available to withdraw, not when the order is completed or when you withdraw. Fiverr's clearing period is 14 days after an order is marked complete, and 7 days for Top Rated sellers, so an order completed in late December can land on the next year's form.

What happens if I do not complete Fiverr's W-9?

Fiverr pauses your Gigs if you do not complete the W-9 process within 30 days. The W-9 is where Fiverr collects the name, address, and Social Security number it uses for the 1099-K, and you can update it later from your account.

Where do I download my Fiverr 1099-K?

On your Earnings page, under the Financial documents tab, choose the 1099-K download report. Fiverr sends a verification code to your phone, you pick the year, and the download link arrives by email. Forms for a tax year go out in January of the next year, so the 2026 form arrives in January 2027.
